The many benefits of turmeric, the miracle herb

Turmeric has long been used in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine due to its anti-inflammatory properties. What most people don’t know, however, is that aside from being a potent anti-inflammatory herb, turmeric also has several other beneficial properties.

Turmeric contains powerful antioxidants that neutralize free radicals known to damage the body’s cells. Aside from providing relief to those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, its antioxidant properties also help protect cells from DNA damage due to cancer. Curcumin, a substance found in turmeric, is also believed to stop cancer cells from spreading.

Turmeric also helps maintain a healthy cardiovascular system by preventing the oxidation of cholesterol in the body. Oxidized cholesterol can damage blood vessels and facilitate the formation of arterial plaque, leading to heart attack and stroke.

Lastly, those dreading the onset of Alzheimer’s could also benefit from turmeric’s many healing properties. Curcumin protects the brain and nerves from oxidation that can lead to neurodegenerative conditions. It also binds to amyloid-β protein fragments in the brain and prevents them from clumping together to form the amyloid plaques that could lead to Alzheimer’s.

To enjoy its health benefits, one could add turmeric to salads, lentil dishes, brown rice, curries or even to yogurt as a veggie dip.
