Nearly half of severe coronavirus cases involve neurological complications

While most cases of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) are reportedly mild or even asymptomatic, nearly half of those who fall into the severe category get it really bad in the form of neurological complications.

A new study out of communist China reportedly found that about 40 percent of people with severe Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) infections develop symptoms like confusion, delirium and muscle pain, all of which stem from nervous system abnormalities. Others develop a high risk of stroke.

This same 40 percent of severe Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) cases also suffer from various brain-related complications, the study claims, while six percent experience stroke or stenosis; 15 percent develop dementia-like symptoms; and 20 percent experience severe muscle pain.

“This study indicates that neurological complications are relatively common in people who have COVID-19,” wrote S. Andrew Josephson, a professor and chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, as well as editor-in-chief of JAMA Neurology, the journal in which this study was published.

“However, the majority of those complications are also relatively common in people with severe pneumonia and viral infections in hospital intensive care units,” he added, suggesting that perhaps it’s pneumonia, and not necessarily the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), that’s actually responsible.

These severe symptoms can also include “confusion or difficulty thinking,” Josephson adds, further warning that people who know they have the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) and develop such symptoms, as well as others like “shortness of breath,” should seek hospital care.

“Somebody who has COVID-19 and is at home and experiences difficulty thinking or confusion or anything that indicates a possible stroke, that is a sign they should come into the hospital for additional care,” Josephson says.

“But a symptom like muscle pain is common in viral infections. People don’t need to come into hospital with that.”

20 percent of coronavirus patients have been admitted to hospitals

Thus far, there have been about 1.7 million cases of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) identified around the world, as well as about 100,000 deaths. And while the numbers vary by country and region, it would appear as though an average of one in five, or about 20 percent of, patients with the virus have required hospital care.

Only about five percent of Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) patients develop what are considered to be life-threatening symptoms of complications, including pneumonia, reports indicate.

This five-percent category is primarily comprised of the elderly and people with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease. At the same time, many of these same folks are already predisposed to developing some of the symptoms that are being associated with extreme cases of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), which again deflects from the virus as necessarily being the culprit.

As part of the study, it was identified that older people, and especially those with preexisting illnesses, end up faring the worst when contracting the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), which is to be expected. At the same time, folks in this category tend not to develop the milder symptoms of the virus, which include fever and cough.

“As with all of the research coming out about the virus, this study shows we still have a lot more to learn,” Josephson concluded about the research. “The bottom line is that people should be aware of these neurological symptoms, and seek medical attention if they need it.”
