On Day 7 of “Beyond The Diagnosis,” aired on May 15, host Jonathan Otto featured Dr. Brandon Nutt, a functional medicine practitioner. According to Nutt, doctors continue to prescribe antidepressants and sleeping pills for symptoms that may have a hidden biological cause. “One of the main issues, is we’re not looking for them,” he explained. “As a healthcare system, we don’t look for them unless something is like a red flag.”
Patients suffering from depression, restless legs, teeth-grinding, brain fog and chronic fatigue are frequently told their labs look normal and advised to eat right and exercise. Meanwhile, microscopic invaders may be releasing neurotoxins directly into their bloodstream.
Dr. Torrie Thompson described the subtle nature of parasitic infection, saying, “Parasites are something that most of us carry.” She outlined the typical route: “If you’re a big sushi eater and you eat raw fish, parasites almost always there, if you have pets, if you swim in rivers and lakes, if you eat raw vegetables, if you’re a gardener and you get dirt under your nails: these are very common ways that we get parasites.”
Contrary to popular belief, parasitic infections in the United States are not limited to travelers returning from developing countries. “The research says, one in three Americans have a parasite,” Nutt stated. “It’s not just giardia from Montezuma’s Revenge down in Mexico; it can be liver flukes, it can be pork-based parasitic infections. Worst-case scenario, it goes to the brain tissue and it can cause serious neurological dysfunction there, or it can end up looking like neurodegenerative disorders.”
Thompson noted that the symptoms often go unrecognized: “We see things like insomnia, depression, gut issues, skin issues, weight issues, whether it’s losing weight or actually gaining weight. When I was dealing with parasites, I gained weight, which seemed very backwards, but it was all the inflammation that these guys kicked up. Restless legs, clenching of your teeth, all of these symptoms can be tied back to parasites.”
For patients who have been told it’s all in your head, the parasitic connection may offer long-awaited answers. “You might not know you have parasite at all until we start doing something,” Nutt explained. “Maybe have an off weekend of your diet and now we’re fueling them a little bit more so that their population grows and now I’m starting to get more brain fog, or more fatigue or, ‘Gosh, why is my testosterone always low?'”
The classic blood work ordered by primary care physicians is not designed to detect these invaders. “There can be indicators, but there’s nothing definitive on that traditional blood work that gives you an insight if you have parasites,” Nutt said.
Thompson added that standard testing has limitations. “You can do a stool test and if you get a parasite, you’re extremely lucky because these guys don’t like to leave your gut, they like to live in their little house that they have, usually in their biofilm layer.”
As noted by BrightU.AI‘s Enoch, a biofilm layer is a resilient, organized community of microorganisms like bacteria and fungi, encased in a protective, slimy matrix of extracellular polymeric substances that forms on moist surfaces. This layer acts as a shield, making the microbes highly resistant to antibiotics, disinfectants and the body’s immune defenses.
Perhaps one of the most surprising revelations is that effective parasite treatment may require paying attention to lunar cycles. “Most parasites will actually follow a moon cycle,” Nutt explained. “Parasites are most active during the full moon. So, when you time your antiparasitic treatment, it should be based on the lunar cycle.”
He described his protocol: “I usually have people start heavy, more the traditional antiparasitic. My nurse practitioner will prescribe a 10-day dose and they’ll do five days before the full moon, five days after the full moon: because the five days before, the adults are swimming around, trying to reproduce and then the five days after is when eggs will start hatching, so that’s when you can kill two generations instead of just the first generation.”
Dr. Diana Wright, a naturopathic oncologist who survived stage 4 cancer, emphasized that parasitic toxins may be a missing link in serious illness. “Some of the most common causes of tumors are toxins that are accumulated,” Wright said. “And these toxins can be parasite toxins, that’s the newest, latest information.”
She described the treatment approach that saved her life: “If you’re going to recover somebody, you have to get their body as clean as you possibly can. You have to remove everything that is hindering their healing and then you have to replace everything that’s missing.”
Thompson offered a structured approach for those seeking to address parasitic burden. “Mold mycotoxins are always first,” she said. “Mold mycotoxins, because they’re immunosuppressive, they turn down the immune system, they let everybody else overgrow.” After addressing mold, she recommends targeting parasites, then environmental toxins and heavy metals and finally healing the gut.
“I always recommend that we work with a practitioner,” Thompson advised. “We have to start by opening our detox pathways. We have to support the liver, gallbladders, kidney, lymphatic system. The body has to be able to move toxins out.” For millions of Americans suffering from unexplained symptoms, the answer may not lie in another prescription—but in a stool test and a targeted anti-parasitic protocol.
